If you're caught up with the latest computer technologies or if you have viewed newest computers recently, you probably may have heard about the terms SSD and HDD. People are often confused between SSD/HDD on which should they buy and how it is going to affect the overall performance of the laptop. So, these questions about the SSD and HDD may be answered throughout this blog.

HDD

Hard Disk Drives abbreviated as HDD were first introduced in 1956 by IBM. It is a non- volatile storage device which means the Information on it won't get off even if the power supply to it is turned off. It has a magnetic disk that rotates at high speed, and it has a reader that is incredibly delicate which reads the data from the drive as the disc rotates at high speed.

SSD

SSD stands for Solid State Drive which is the latest technology of HDD. These storage devices invented in the 1970s but these drives are comparatively expensive.

SSD uses flash memory instead of moving parts. so there is no any type of data loss problem or drive corrupt problem. The best part of SSD is, the read/write speed of SSD is 250mbps-500mbps which is way more than HDD drives.

Comparision

These are the some bases for the comparison of the SSDs & HDDs.

Speed

When comparing the two storage drives, the speed at which data is written and read is the distinguishing factor between HDDs and SSDs. As HDDs are the mechanical devices, the flow of data depends on the speed (rpm) of the disk. SSDs, however, use flash memory and an embedded processor to store data.

The speed of the SSDs is very very fast as compared to HDD. The Speed is almost 6 times faster than the older HDDs. SSDs provide noticeable performance upgrades, both for consumer-grade computers and web hosting servers.

Reliability

In HDDs the data loss is one of the major problems. After multiple overwriting and as the HDD gets older the risk of the Disk getting Corrupted increases. The normal estimated life span of the HDDs is basically around 5 Years.  With platters that spin at 7,200 rotations (or more) per minute, the mechanisms inside HDDs are not only subject to more wear and tear, but they are more susceptible to damage if dropped or bumped.

Because there are no moving parts, SSDs tend to be more durable and can better withstand the various bumps or jolts your computer experiences. The read/write process doesn’t degrade, and SSDs will maintain data integrity for more than 200 years.

Storage Capacity

The Storage Capacity of the HDDs are basically the maximum. The HDDs are available in the TBs, HBs ,ZBs . They are also used in the Servers for storing the Huge amount of Data. However the storage capacity of the SSDs is very low as Compared to HDDs. They are basically available upto certain terabytes in the Market only, due to the high cost of the silicon chips.

Cost

The price comparison shows a great difference between SSDs and HDDs, with consumer SSDs costing over 10-times as much as HDDs per GB. It is a high price to pay for the improved speed and performance, but an increasing amount of laptops are shipped with SSDs – due to the substantial performance benefits. However, if faster read and write speeds do not greatly affect your PC use, the higher price of a solid state drive may not be worth it as you can get HDD with much greater storage capacity at that price point.

Conclusion

HDD's are the popular choice for the majority of average consumers, usually choosing the HDD as the storage option in their new computer simply due to the much cheaper cost. On the contrary, if the budget is not your major concerned and speed, high performance is on priority the SSD drive is the right choice for you.
